QT Nightlife Presents: RIZE SF | Tapestry
QTAPI Week celebrates this year theme as Tapestry. This beautifully highlights the rich interconnectedness and resilience of our queer and transgender Asian and Pacific Islander communities, emphasizing how our diverse stories, identities, and experiences weave together to form a vibrant and unified fabric. In celebrating the many events during QTAPI Week, it provides for visibility, advocacy, and cultural affirmation. It acknowledges the unique challenges faced by QTAPI individuals while also honoring the strength, diversity, and solidarity that define our community. By framing this week around the "Tapestry" metaphor, we recognize that each thread—each individual story—contributes to the larger narrative of inclusivity, resilience, and hope that is essential to San Francisco’s vibrant identity.

Raise the Pride Flag in SF Japantown 2025
On Saturday, May 31st at 2pm, the Japantown Rainbow Coalition invites you to the Fourth Annual raising of the Progress Pride Flag in S.F. Japantown, in Osaka Way at the Torii Gate. RSVP Here!
Join the Japantown Rainbow Coalition in celebrating Queer and Trans Asian Pacific Islander Week (QTAPI) and Pride Month for words of wisdom from JARF, San Francisco Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League (SF JACL), Okaeri NorCal, Queer and Trans Asian Pacific Islander Week (QTAPI) and more, followed by a procession to Konko Church of San Francisco for the raising of the Progress Pride Flag.
Be sure to stop by the Japantown businesses before or after for lunch or dinner, shopping, or learning about Japantown history.
The Rainbow Coalition has championed the raising of the rainbow flag to proudly proclaim our intersecting identities and show that people of LGBTQ+ identities don't just live in the Tenderloin, SoMA or the Castro, but also places like Japantown. San Francisco has long been known as an epicenter for LGBTQ+ organizing and celebration, especially during the month of June, Pride Month. The City has a rich history of LGBTQ+ activism and we hope to continue that tradition and highlight the hidden history of LGBTQ+ communities and people in Japantown that a model minority myth often conceals. For example, it was in 1954 that the Japantown YMCA hosted the very first convention of the Mattachine Society, one of the earliest gay liberation organizations. In fact, the YMCA holds the designation of being the fourth property on the West Coast listed on the National Register of Historic Places for LGBTQ significance.
The Japantown Rainbow Coalition is a group of Japantown community members organizing to raise the Pride Flag. The group appreciates the support from the community organizations and local businesses and merchants and the project is sponsored by the San Francisco Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League with community support from Konko Church of San Francisco, Omusubi, the Berkeley Chapter of the JACL, the Japantown Cultural District, and the San Francisco Buddhist Church. We also appreciate the financial support from Japantown Community Benefits District (JCBD).

What is QTAPI Week? In 2021, San Francisco became the first city in America to formally designate an honor to the local queer and trans Asian and Pacific communities. Ruth Tabancay began her professional life as a hospital laboratory technologist, then as a physician in private practice, and finally as an exhibiting artist. Her recent work concerns environmental issues such as bleaching of the coral reefs, organisms’ ability to digest plastic, sustainable alternatives to fast fashion, and ecological systems such as mycorrhizal networks and bee colonies.
AIDS Memorial Quilt
6–10 p.m.
Osher Gallery 1: Human Phenomenon
This is a section of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, the world's largest ongoing community folk art project. It celebrates the lives of people who have died of AIDS-related causes.
Created in 1987, the Quilt consists of more than 50,000 3x6-foot panels. In its entirety, the Quilt weighs more than 54 tons and encompasses 1.5 million square feet of fabric.
Within the Quilt are the names and stories of more than 110,000 friends, family members, and loved ones whose lives were lost. The Quilt is a symbol of social justice and an important educational resource to ensure that our nation never forgets the 700,000 lives lost in the United States from AIDS-related causes.
Blending the talents and stories of the Bay Area’s QTAPI community with the Exploratorium’s unique perspectives on science, art, and human perception, this special After Dark will stoke delight and curiosity through drag, speaker sessions, hands-on activities, and more.

ABOUT THE FILMS
From the burgeoning seeds of love and solidarity to the verdant roots of family, four intimate, tender, and moving films illuminate how queer communities in Vietnam, Bangladesh, and the Philippines persist and flourish with radiant hope.
It’s a time capsule of queerness situated within urban modern Vietnam, as queer women encounter each other in passing. It’s the specific queer experience of what happens to a young Catholic schoolgirl with a crush on a nun in the rural Philippines where there is no GSA network. It’s the conflict between a middle-class Bangladeshi father and his outspoken, independent daughter, as it flushes out patriarchy, class, and gendered expectations. It’s the coming of age for a queer Vietnamese teenage girl coming out to her mother amidst tears and eventual calm.
All films are subtitled for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing and audio described for Blind and Low Vision communities.
Online Screening
Friday, May 23 – Sunday, June 1, catch the full lineup of Queer Asian World Cinema online.
In-Person Screening
Saturday, May 31, join QWOCMAP and CCC for the screening and a thoughtful post-screening conversation about the ways that we celebrate our queer identities and navigate within an Asian cultural context.
